What are my chances of getting a merit scholarship from the University of Chicago?

I’m applying to UChicago and trying to understand how realistic merit scholarships are there. I know the school is very selective overall, but I’m not sure how that affects scholarship decisions.

I’m mostly trying to figure out whether merit aid at UChicago is extremely rare or if a strong applicant has a real shot.

A merit scholarship from UChicago is possible, but it is not something most admitted students receive, and it should be treated as a reach even for a very strong applicant. UChicago is extremely selective overall, and its most visible merit awards, such as the University Scholar programs, go to a relatively small share of the incoming class. In practice, strong academics are necessary but usually not enough by themselves, because scholarship recipients tend to stand out across academics, intellectual fit, impact, and the overall application.

UChicago does offer merit scholarships, including awards that can range from smaller annual amounts to larger named scholarships, but the school is also known for meeting full demonstrated financial need for admitted students. That means need-based aid is a much bigger part of the funding picture than merit aid. If your question is whether merit aid there is extremely rare, the honest answer is that it is fairly limited compared with the number of applicants and even compared with the number of students admitted.

A strong applicant absolutely has a real shot, but not a predictable one. The applicants who are most competitive for merit money usually have top grades in the most rigorous courses available, exceptional testing if they submit scores, unusually distinctive extracurricular achievement, and essays that fit UChicago’s highly intellectual and quirky application style very well. The essays matter a lot there because they help show the kind of curiosity and originality UChicago values.

If affordability is a major factor, pay close attention to UChicago’s net price calculator and need-based aid policies, because those are likely to matter more than merit scholarship odds.
