What visa documents does the University of Chicago typically require from international students before enrollment?

I’m an international high school student planning to apply to UChicago and I’m trying to understand the visa paperwork side of the process. I know schools usually need some kind of immigration documents before enrollment, but I’m not clear on what those documents usually are.

I want to make sure I understand the typical visa document requirements ahead of time so I can prepare everything correctly.

Before enrolling, UChicago typically needs the documents required to issue your student immigration form, usually the Form I-20 for an F-1 visa or the DS-2019 for a J-1 visa. In practice, that usually means a copy of your passport identity page, proof of financial support for at least the first year of study, and any current U.S. immigration documents if you are already in the United States on another visa. You generally do not submit the actual student visa stamp before admission, because the school first issues the I-20 or DS-2019 and then you use that document to apply for the visa.

For financial documentation, UChicago typically asks for bank statements, sponsor letters, scholarship letters, or other official proof showing enough funds to cover tuition, fees, housing, meals, and personal expenses. If a parent or other sponsor is funding you, schools usually want both the financial statement and a signed declaration of support.

If you are already studying in the U.S., UChicago may also require copies of your current I-20 or DS-2019, visa page, I-94 record, and sometimes an immigration transfer form from your current school. Students who hold dual citizenship or another immigration status may be asked for additional status-specific documents.
