What makes a strong University of Chicago supplemental video?

I’m working on my UChicago application and the supplemental video feels a little different from the rest of the application. I know it’s supposed to show personality, but I’m not sure what actually makes it come across well.

I want to understand what a strong UChicago supplemental video usually includes and what admissions readers seem to value in it.

A strong University of Chicago supplemental video feels unmistakably like you, not like a polished ad. The best ones usually show clear personality, comfort with ideas, and a slightly unconventional or playful perspective that fits UChicago’s culture. Admissions readers are not looking for perfect production quality; they are looking for authenticity, self-awareness, and a sense of how you think and communicate.

What tends to work well is choosing one small, specific idea and developing it in a memorable way. That could be an everyday obsession, a niche interest, a strange question you keep returning to, or a moment that reveals how your mind works. UChicago tends to appreciate intellectual curiosity and originality, so a video that connects your personality to how you notice, analyze, question, or enjoy the world often lands better than a generic introduction about achievements.

A strong video also has a clear point of view. Instead of listing clubs, awards, or résumé facts already in the application, show something the rest of the file does not fully capture: your humor, voice, energy, thought process, or unusual combination of interests.

In practice, that usually means being concise, natural, and intentional. Speak like a real person, not like you are delivering a scripted acceptance speech. Some editing is fine, but overproducing it can make it feel less genuine. A simple video with a strong concept, a confident but relaxed delivery, and a specific personal angle is often more effective than something flashy.

One useful test is this: could this video be sent to any college, or does it reflect the kind of curious, quirky, thoughtful presence UChicago tends to value? If it could go anywhere, it is probably too generic. If it reveals your mind in a way that feels specific, a little bold, and genuinely human, that is usually what makes it strong.
