What counts as strong supplemental materials for the University of Chicago application?

For UChicago, the strongest supplemental materials are the ones that add genuinely new information and fit the way the university reads applications. In practice, that usually means a very strong UChicago supplemental essay, the uncommon essay response, and only optional materials that show a real, high-level achievement or voice that is not already obvious elsewhere in your application. Extra material helps most when it deepens academic curiosity, originality, or a serious artistic commitment, because those qualities align closely with UChicago’s culture.

The most important supplement is still the writing. UChicago is especially known for caring about how applicants think on the page, so the Why UChicago response and the quirky extended essay matter more than random add-ons. The best responses are specific about programs, classes, research centers, traditions, or intellectual communities at UChicago, not just generally “I love learning” language.

Optional materials can help if they are clearly exceptional. A visual art, music, theater, dance, or creative writing portfolio makes sense if that work is a major part of your profile and is developed enough to be evaluated seriously.
