What is the best strategy for writing the University of Chicago Common App essay?

I’m working on my college essays and UChicago seems like the one that really rewards a creative approach. I know the Common App personal statement still needs to show who I am, but I’m not sure how much I should lean into originality versus being straightforward.

I’m trying to figure out what usually makes a strong UChicago-style essay stand out without feeling forced or overly weird.

For UChicago, the best strategy is to keep the Common App essay grounded and personal, then save your most visibly experimental or playful writing for UChicago’s own supplemental prompts. UChicago does value originality, but the Common App essay still needs to give admissions readers a clear, trustworthy sense of how you think, what you care about, and how you make meaning from experience. The strongest approach is usually a distinctive perspective delivered with control, not randomness or “quirky for quirky’s sake.”

A strong UChicago Common App essay stands out when it feels intellectually alive and genuinely specific. That can mean an unusual topic, but more often it means an ordinary topic examined in a sharp, unexpected way. If you write about a common subject, what matters is the lens: the precise detail you notice, the question you keep returning to, or the pattern you see that other people miss.

What tends to work well for UChicago is writing that shows curiosity, self-awareness, and strong command of language. Readers should come away thinking, “This student has a real mind.” That does not require a surreal structure or elaborate gimmick. In fact, if the format gets in the way of clarity, it usually hurts more than it helps.

A good test is whether the essay would still be compelling if you removed the clever framing device. If the answer is no, the concept may be doing too much of the work. The substance should still reveal values, habits of thought, and a meaningful shift in understanding.

Be memorable through precision, insight, and voice. Then let the famous UChicago supplement be the place where you can push further into wit, abstraction, or formal experimentation if that fits you naturally.

The essays that feel forced usually announce their weirdness too loudly. The essays that land well tend to be confident, specific, and a little surprising without trying to perform eccentricity. UChicago likes students who are thoughtful and bold, but also coherent.
