Should I send a follow-up email after a UConn interview, and what should it say?

I just had a college interview with UConn, and I want to make sure I handle the follow-up correctly. I’m not sure whether sending a thank-you or follow-up email is expected, or if it could seem unnecessary.

I’m trying to figure out the best way to phrase it so it sounds polite and genuine without being too long.

Yes, sending a short thank-you email after a UConn interview is a good idea. It is not usually a make-or-break part of the process, but it shows professionalism, interest, and good follow-through.

For UConn, the email does not need to be elaborate or overly formal. A few sentences is enough: thank the interviewer for their time, mention one specific topic you enjoyed discussing, and, if relevant, briefly restate your interest in UConn. That makes the message feel genuine instead of copied and pasted.

A simple structure works well: greeting, thank you, one detail from the interview, one sentence about continued interest, and a polite closing. Avoid writing a long recap of your qualifications or trying to add a lot of new information unless the interviewer specifically asked for something.

You could say something like: “Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today. I really enjoyed learning more about UConn, especially our conversation about [specific program, campus opportunity, or topic you discussed]. Our conversation made me even more excited about the possibility of attending UConn. Thank you again for your time and insight.”

If your interview felt more casual, your tone can be warm and natural, but still polished. If you do not have the interviewer’s email, it is fine not to send one. And if some time has already passed, sending a short thank-you a little late is still better than not sending one at all.
