How does freshman advising work at UConn?

I’m trying to understand what advising is like for first-year students at UConn before I commit. I’ve heard some schools have assigned advisors right away, while others make students figure a lot out on their own.

I’d like to know how freshman advising is generally structured there and what kind of support a first-year student can expect.

At UConn, first-year advising is fairly structured, and most freshmen are not left to figure everything out alone. New students are typically connected with an academic advisor through their school or college before or during orientation, and advising is tied closely to course registration, major requirements, and transition support. UConn also uses an advising system where the exact setup depends on your academic program, so students in Engineering, Business, CLAS, or exploratory tracks may have slightly different advising models.

In general, freshmen meet with an advisor around the time they register for classes, especially through orientation and first-semester planning. Advisors help with choosing courses, understanding general education requirements, placement results, and mapping out early steps for a major. If you enter UConn undecided or in a program designed for exploration, advising tends to be even more hands-on because part of the goal is helping you narrow academic interests.

UConn also has support beyond just the assigned academic advisor. First-year students can use resources like the Academic Achievement Center, tutoring, and other campus offices that help with study skills, academic adjustment, and staying on track. In practice, that means advising is not just about signing off on classes, but also pointing students toward the right support when problems come up.

One thing to keep in mind is that the experience can vary by school and by individual advisor. Some students build a strong relationship with one advisor right away, while others rely more on a mix of advising staff, faculty, and campus resources.
