How does major selection work for UConn transfer students?

I’m planning to apply as a transfer student and I’m trying to understand how major selection works at UConn. I’m not sure if transfers choose a major when they apply or if they can switch after enrolling.

I want to make sure I understand how tied the major is to the transfer application before I submit everything.

At UConn, transfer students do apply to a specific major in most cases, and that major can matter for admission because some programs have their own prerequisites and space limits. UConn reviews transfer applicants by school or college as well as by the university overall, so your intended major is usually part of the application decision. After enrolling, it is possible to change majors, but switching is easier in some fields than others and may require completing prerequisite courses and meeting GPA standards.

This matters most for selective or capacity-limited majors such as business, engineering, nursing, and some allied health or fine arts programs. For those areas, UConn often expects certain coursework to be completed before transfer, and admission into the university does not automatically guarantee access to every major later. If you apply to a less restricted major and hope to switch into a highly competitive one after enrolling, that can be difficult.

If you are undecided, UConn does have options for students who are not fully committed to a major, but transfer applicants generally should still be thoughtful about the academic program they list. The major on your application should fit your completed coursework and your transfer goals, especially if your credits line up with a particular school within UConn.

In practice, the safest approach is to apply directly to the major you actually want if it is available for transfer admission and you meet the course expectations. If you are considering changing majors later, expect that the process may involve an internal application or minimum academic benchmarks depending on the program.
