How does UConn determine merit scholarship eligibility for admitted students?

I’m trying to understand how UConn decides who gets merit scholarships because I’m planning my applications and want to know what factors matter most. I’ve seen that some schools use GPA, test scores, class rank, or a holistic review, but I’m not sure how UConn handles it.

I’m mostly trying to figure out what parts of a student’s profile are considered when merit aid is awarded.

UConn’s merit scholarships for first-year admitted students are awarded mainly through the admissions review, and eligibility is based on the overall strength of your application rather than one single cutoff. In practice, the biggest factors are your academic record in high school, the rigor of your coursework, and how competitive you are within the applicant pool.

For UConn, class rank can be considered if your school reports it, but not all schools do, so it is not a universal requirement. Standardized test scores may be reviewed if submitted, but UConn has used a test-optional process for undergraduate admission, which means scores are not necessary to be considered in the same way they once were. That makes grades and course rigor especially important.

The university’s most prominent merit programs, including awards tied to very strong academic achievement, usually go to students near the top of the admitted pool. That generally means excellent grades in challenging classes such as honors, AP, IB, or dual enrollment, along with a strong overall application. Depending on the program, leadership, extracurricular impact, and other accomplishments may help distinguish students, but academic strength is the core driver.

So if you are planning your application around UConn merit aid, focus most on building the strongest transcript possible, taking rigorous courses, and submitting your application by the university’s priority deadlines. Those pieces matter more than chasing any single published GPA or test-score threshold, because UConn’s merit awards are competitive and tied to the overall admitted pool each year.
