What makes a strong UConn supplemental short answer?
I’m working on my UConn application and I want my short answer to actually sound specific and thoughtful instead of generic. I know these responses are usually pretty short, so I’m trying to focus on making every sentence count.
I’m mainly wondering what qualities make a strong answer for a supplemental short response like this.

A strong UConn supplemental short answer is specific, grounded, and clearly tied to UConn rather than sounding like it could be sent to any school. The best responses name concrete academic, campus, or community opportunities at UConn and connect them to something real about you, such as your interests, habits, or goals. Because these answers are short, clarity matters a lot: one focused idea usually works better than trying to cover everything.
What usually makes a response stand out is a clear match between you and the school. If you mention UConn’s research opportunities, honors program, specific majors, learning communities, undergraduate involvement, or campus culture, explain why that detail matters to you personally. Saying “UConn has great academics” is generic, but saying you are drawn to a specific program, course style, or hands-on opportunity and linking it to how you learn or what you want to pursue feels much stronger.
A good short answer also shows personality through detail. That does not mean trying to sound dramatic or overly polished. It means using a concrete example, preference, or motivation that sounds like an actual person, such as the kind of questions you like to explore, the communities you want to join, or the role you hope to play on campus.
For a short response, a simple structure works well: one sentence that states your main point, one or two sentences with specific UConn details, and one sentence showing what that connection says about you. Keep the focus narrow. A response about one academic interest and one related UConn resource will usually feel stronger than a list of clubs, rankings, and campus features.
The weakest answers tend to be broad, interchangeable, or overly résumé-like. If your draft includes phrases like strong reputation, diverse community, excellent professors, or endless opportunities, make sure each one is followed by a concrete example and a personal reason. The goal is not to sound impressive in general. The goal is to make it obvious why UConn makes sense for you in particular.
