What is a good strategy for writing the UConn leadership essay?
I’m applying to UConn and one of the prompts asks about leadership, which is a little tricky for me because I’m not a captain or club president. I do have a few experiences where I took initiative in class, at work, and in a student club, but I’m not sure what kind of example makes the strongest essay.
I want to focus on a leadership essay that sounds genuine and shows impact without feeling forced.

For the UConn leadership essay, the best strategy is to define leadership broadly and choose one example where you clearly influenced other people or improved a situation. You do not need a formal title like captain or president. An essay about stepping up in class, at work, or in a club can absolutely work if it shows what you did and what changed because of you.
The strongest example is usually the one with a specific problem, a clear action you took, and a visible result. A class example can work well if you noticed a gap and organized others, such as creating a study system, helping a team project recover, or getting quieter students involved. A work example can be especially strong because it often shows maturity, accountability, and leadership without authority.
A good structure is simple: describe the situation, explain the challenge, show the initiative you took, and reflect on what the experience taught you about leadership. Keep the focus on your decisions, not just the group’s success. For example, instead of saying you helped your club run an event, show that you noticed confusion, created a plan, assigned roles, followed up, and adapted when something went wrong.
What usually makes this essay feel genuine is specificity. Avoid broad claims like “I learned leadership is important.” Say what kind of leader you are becoming: someone who leads by listening, by staying calm under pressure, by noticing what others need, or by turning ideas into action. That kind of reflection feels more believable and fits students who are not formal leaders.
If you are choosing between class, work, and club experiences, pick the one where your actions are easiest to trace from start to finish. The best UConn leadership essay is the one that most clearly shows initiative, effect on others, and a thoughtful understanding of leadership.
