What Chinese language level is required for international applicants to Tsinghua University?

I’m a high school student looking at Tsinghua University, and I’m trying to understand whether international applicants need to already know Chinese. Some of the programs I’m interested in may be taught in English, but I’m not sure if there is still a required Chinese level for admission.

I want to know what kind of Chinese language requirement, if any, is typically expected for undergraduate applicants.

For international undergraduate applicants to Tsinghua University, the required Chinese level depends on the language of instruction for the program. If you apply to a Chinese-taught undergraduate program, Tsinghua typically expects strong Chinese proficiency, usually shown through HSK results. If you apply to an English-taught program, Chinese may not be required for admission, though some programs still expect basic Chinese ability or encourage students to study it after enrolling.

For Chinese-medium bachelor’s programs, the standard is generally high enough that you can follow lectures, complete written coursework, and function in daily campus life. In practice, that usually means an advanced intermediate to advanced level of Chinese, not just conversational ability. Tsinghua’s international admissions pages and specific program pages are important here because language requirements can vary by major.

For English-taught undergraduate options, the main language requirement is usually proof of English proficiency instead. Even so, living in Beijing and handling everyday matters can be much easier with some Chinese.

Always check the exact undergraduate program page, because Tsinghua sometimes sets program-specific standards rather than one single university-wide rule for every applicant.
