In that context, the structure is often straightforward: interest in the subject, evidence of deeper exploration, and preparation for study.

If you are writing a Common App personal statement, Oxford examples can actually mislead you. A strong U.S. personal essay often centers on a story, a personal perspective, or a defining way of thinking, not a mini academic pitch for your intended major. Using an Oxford-style statement for that kind of essay can make your writing feel stiff, overly formal, or too focused on resume-like accomplishments.

The best way to use Oxford examples is selectively. Study them for how students provide concrete evidence of interest and avoid vague claims like saying they are passionate without showing why. Do not copy their structure or assume that a strong college essay in general should sound heavily academic.
