What should I include in an Oxford recommendation letter request?
I’m applying to Oxford and need to ask a teacher for a recommendation letter. I know it should speak to my academic ability, but I’m not sure what specific information is actually helpful to give them.
I want to make the request as easy as possible for my teacher without overloading them with random details. What should I include when asking for an Oxford recommendation letter?

For an Oxford recommendation request, give your teacher the information that helps them write specifically about your academic fit for the course. Oxford cares much more about subject-specific academic ability than about leadership, personality, or general extracurriculars, so the most useful materials are your intended course, why you want to study it, and concrete examples of your work in that subject. A strong Oxford reference usually comments on intellectual curiosity, analytical ability, writing or problem-solving skills, class performance, and readiness for intensive tutorial-style study.
Also give your teacher a draft of your personal statement, a transcript or list of current classes and grades, and short reminders of specific papers, projects, discussions, exams, or assignments where you did especially strong work.
It also helps to include how the letter will be submitted through UCAS, and any practical instructions your school uses. If you have relevant supercurricular activities, share those too, but keep them academic: books, lectures, research, Olympiads, competitions, independent reading, extension work, or subject-related summer study. For Oxford, these are much more useful than a resume full of unrelated clubs.
A good request packet is usually brief: a polite email asking if they can write a strong academic reference, your intended course, your personal statement draft, transcript, and a one-page brag sheet focused on subject-specific strengths. On that page, list the qualities you hope they can speak to, such as originality in analysis, persistence with difficult material, sophistication in class discussion, or unusually strong lab or essay work.
One thing to avoid is sending a long generic activities list and expecting the teacher to figure out what matters. For Oxford, the best letters are detailed and academic, so the more you can remind them of concrete evidence from your classes, the easier it is for them to write the kind of reference Oxford actually values.
