What are the best majors for pre-med at Stony Brook University?

I’m a high school senior trying to figure out what to study if I go to Stony Brook and eventually apply to medical school. I know pre-med isn’t an official major, so I’m trying to understand which majors there tend to give students the best preparation while still letting them complete med school prerequisites.

At Stony Brook, the best majors for pre-med are usually Biology, Biochemistry, Health Science, and Psychology, with Biology and Biochemistry being the most direct fits for medical school prerequisites. Biology makes scheduling the core pre-med sciences relatively straightforward, and Biochemistry is especially strong if you like chemistry and molecular-level science. Health Science can work well for students interested in clinical or public health settings, while Psychology is a good option if you want flexibility and are willing to plan your science courses carefully.

Biology is often the most practical choice because it overlaps heavily with courses like general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, biology, and upper-level life sciences that are useful for the MCAT.

If your priority is the highest GPA possible while still completing requirements, the best major is usually the one you can do well in, not necessarily the hardest science major. Medical schools care much more about GPA, MCAT, clinical experience, research, and service than about whether your major says Biology or Psychology. At Stony Brook, that means a non-science major can still be a strong pre-med path as long as you complete the required science sequence on time.

A practical way to choose is this: pick Biology if you want the clearest pre-med roadmap, Biochemistry if you are comfortable with a more rigorous chemistry focus, Health Science if you want a health-centered curriculum, and Psychology if you want flexibility plus strong relevance to patient care and behavior. At Stony Brook specifically, Biology and Biochemistry are probably the most common and most efficient options for pre-med students.
