Is Stony Brook a good choice for a health sciences major if I want to go pre-med?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down colleges, and Stony Brook keeps coming up because of its health sciences options. I’m interested in a path that could support pre-med, but I’m not sure how well the major actually prepares students for med school and related opportunities.

I’m mostly trying to understand whether this is a strong major for someone who wants a science-heavy, pre-health track.

Yes, Stony Brook can be a very good choice for pre-med, but the Health Science major itself is usually not the most science-heavy route if you want the strongest traditional med school preparation. At Stony Brook, many pre-med students instead major in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or another natural science because those majors line up more directly with medical school prerequisite courses. Stony Brook is especially strong for pre-health students because it has a major academic medical center, Stony Brook Medicine, plus access to clinical settings, research, and advising tied to a large research university.

The Health Science major at Stony Brook is more interdisciplinary and often geared toward healthcare systems, public health, patient care, and upper-division clinical or professional topics rather than being a pure lab-science major. That does not mean you cannot go to med school from it, but you would need to plan carefully to fit in the standard pre-med requirements like general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics, math, and often biochemistry. If what you want is a clearly science-heavy path, Biology or Biochemistry is usually the cleaner fit.

Where Stony Brook stands out is the overall pre-med environment. The university has strong STEM coursework, substantial research activity, hospital exposure, and a recognizable reputation in science and medicine. For a student who wants serious medical school preparation and is comfortable in a rigorous academic setting, that is a real advantage.
