Is Stony Brook University considered a commuter school?

I’m trying to figure out what the student life is like before I apply. I’ve heard different things about whether Stony Brook has mostly commuters or a more traditional residential campus.

I’m just looking to understand how common commuting is there and what that means for campus life.

Stony Brook is not just a commuter school, but commuting is definitely a meaningful part of campus life. It has a large residential population with many students living on campus, and it also serves a sizable number of Long Island students who commute from home. In practice, that means it feels more like a mixed campus than a purely residential or purely commuter one.

Student life is active enough that you can still get a traditional college experience, especially if you live on campus or stay involved after classes. Stony Brook has residence halls, dining, clubs, Division I athletics, research opportunities, and campus events, so there is real campus activity beyond the classroom. At the same time, because some students leave after class, the social atmosphere can feel less consistently all-day immersive than at a small fully residential college.

A lot depends on how you plan to experience the school. Students who live on campus usually find it much easier to build a social routine, attend events, and make the campus feel lively. Commuters can still be involved, but they often need to be more intentional about staying for clubs, evening programs, or meeting friends between classes.
