Does volunteer work help with USD admissions?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out what matters most in college applications. I do some volunteer work, but I’m not sure if it actually makes a difference for admissions at USD or if it’s just something nice to have.

I’m mostly trying to understand whether volunteering is something admissions officers really look at when reviewing applicants.

Yes, volunteer work can help with University of San Diego admissions, but it matters most as one meaningful part of your overall application rather than as a standalone advantage. USD reviews applicants holistically, and service fits especially well with the school’s Catholic mission and emphasis on developing ethical leaders and community engagement. In practice, consistent involvement, initiative, and real impact matter more than piling up hours.

At USD, admissions officers are not usually looking for volunteer work just because it “looks good.” They are more interested in what your activities say about your values, commitments, and how you spend your time outside class. If your service is connected to something you genuinely care about, and you can show growth or responsibility through it, that is more persuasive than occasional volunteering done only to check a box.

This is especially relevant because USD places visible value on service, social justice, and community involvement in campus life. An applicant whose extracurricular profile reflects those themes can seem like a stronger fit for the university’s culture. That said, volunteering will not make up for weak academics if your grades, course rigor, or other core parts of the application are not competitive.

The strongest way volunteer work helps is when it shows depth. For example, tutoring younger students every week for two years, organizing a donation drive through a club, or taking on a leadership role at a nonprofit says much more than a long list of one-day events. If you include volunteering in your application, focus on what you actually did, why it mattered, and what responsibility you took on.
