How important are extracurriculars for admission to the University of San Diego?

I’m a high school junior trying to understand how much USD cares about extracurricular involvement in admissions. I’ve been focused on grades and test prep, but I’m wondering how much my clubs, sports, and volunteering actually matter compared with academics.

I want to know how admissions officers seem to evaluate extracurriculars overall when reviewing an application.

Extracurriculars matter at the University of San Diego, but they are not more important than your academic record. USD puts the most weight on the strength of your coursework, grades, and overall college readiness, while activities help show who you are outside the classroom and how you might contribute to campus life. In practice, strong extracurriculars can strengthen an application, especially when they show leadership, sustained commitment, service, initiative, or a clear personal interest.

USD uses a holistic review process, so admissions officers are not just counting how many clubs or volunteer hours you have. They are usually looking for quality over quantity: long-term involvement, meaningful impact, and evidence that you took advantage of what was available to you. A student deeply involved in two or three activities often comes across better than someone with a long but shallow list.

For USD specifically, service and community engagement can resonate because the university emphasizes values like compassion, inclusion, and service. That does not mean you need extensive volunteering to be admitted, but it does mean activities connected to helping others, mentoring, faith communities, advocacy, or local involvement can fit the school’s mission especially well.

Sports, clubs, jobs, family responsibilities, arts, internships, and independent projects can all count positively. A part-time job or caring for siblings can be just as meaningful as student government if it shows responsibility and consistency. What matters most is whether your activities add depth to your application and help explain your interests, character, and potential role in the USD community.
