How does need-based aid work at the University of San Diego?

I’m trying to understand how need-based aid is handled at USD because I’m starting to make a college list and cost is a big factor for me. I know some schools are more generous with grants and others mostly offer loans or work-study.

I want to know how need-based aid is typically determined there and what kinds of aid students usually receive.

At the University of San Diego, need-based aid is determined mainly from the FAFSA and, in some cases, the CSS Profile, along with your family’s financial information and cost of attendance. USD then builds a package that can include federal, state, and institutional aid, and need-based help often comes as a mix of grants, loans, and work-study rather than only free grant money. Because USD is a private university with a relatively high sticker price, the net cost can vary a lot from family to family.

Need-based aid may include Federal Pell Grants for eligible students, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants in some cases, Cal Grants for qualifying California residents, Federal Work-Study, and federal student loans.

In practice, many students do not receive a package made up entirely of grants. It is common for need-based packages at private universities like USD to include some self-help aid, especially federal direct loans and sometimes work-study, alongside grant assistance. Merit scholarships can also reduce cost, but those are separate from pure need-based aid and may be awarded at the same time.

If cost is a major factor, the most useful step is to check USD’s net price calculator because that gives the best school-specific estimate of what your family might actually pay. Pay attention to how much of the package is grant aid versus loans, since that is the clearest way to judge how generous the offer really is.
