How can I stand out as an applicant to the University of San Diego?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out how to make my application more memorable. I know grades and activities matter, but I’m not sure what USD seems to value most in an applicant.

I want to understand what kinds of experiences, essays, or extracurriculars can help a student stand out in a way that feels genuine.

To stand out at the University of San Diego, focus on showing fit with USD’s values, not just piling on achievements. USD is a private Catholic university that emphasizes academic curiosity, leadership, community engagement, and care for the common good, so the strongest applications usually connect accomplishments to service, character, and impact. A memorable applicant often shows depth in a few areas, clear personal motivation, and a genuine reason USD’s mission and campus culture make sense for them.

Academically, strong grades in a challenging course load matter a lot, but what helps you stand out is the story behind your interests. If you care about business, marine science, engineering, psychology, or another field, show how you explored that interest beyond class through research, projects, internships, or sustained involvement. USD is not looking for a random list of clubs as much as evidence that you follow through and contribute meaningfully.

For extracurriculars, impact and consistency usually matter more than prestige. Leadership can help, but it does not have to mean being club president. Starting a tutoring effort, organizing a community project, mentoring younger students, working a job with real responsibility, or committing to service in a way that taught you something concrete can all be compelling, especially because USD’s culture tends to value service-oriented leadership.

Your essays are one of the best ways to become memorable. The strongest ones tend to be specific, reflective, and personal rather than overly polished or broad. Instead of writing about wanting to help people in a general way, write about one real experience that changed how you think, what you learned about yourself, and how that connects to what you would bring to USD’s community.

It also helps to show that you understand USD itself. Referencing aspects like its emphasis on undergraduate teaching, study abroad, or its strong community-oriented campus can make your interest feel informed, but only if those details clearly connect to your goals.
