What are the best tips for succeeding in Louisiana State University’s first-year experience?
I’m a high school senior trying to get a better sense of what the first year at LSU is really like. I keep hearing that the first-year experience can make a big difference in how smoothly the transition goes, especially with classes, campus life, and staying on track.
I’m mostly looking for general advice from students who have been through it and what helped them adjust and do well during that first year.

The best way to succeed in LSU’s first year is to get organized early, use campus support before you feel behind, and make a small campus routine quickly. At LSU, the transition is easier when students learn Moodle and Workday right away, meet professors during office hours early in the semester, and use the Center for Academic Success for tutoring or study help before grades slip. Living on or near campus also helps because LSU is a very active, high-energy campus, and it is easy to get pulled in many directions if you do not set a schedule.
A practical first step is treating your weekly calendar seriously from the start. Block class time, study time, meals, workouts, and club meetings so Baton Rouge life does not become one long stream of distractions. LSU has a big-school feel, so it helps to make a large campus feel smaller by joining one or two organizations, going to welcome events, and building familiarity with a few spaces like the library, student union, and your academic building.
Academically, do not wait until the first exam to figure out whether your study habits work. Intro classes at LSU can be large, which means it is easy to blend in if you skip lectures or fall behind. Sit near the front when possible, introduce yourself to at least one professor in each class, and go to Supplemental Instruction or tutoring if a course offers it.
Socially, balance involvement with restraint. LSU has a strong campus culture around athletics, events, and student life, which can be exciting but time-consuming. Students who usually adjust best are the ones who say yes to community but no to overcommitting during the first month.
It also helps to learn the basics of advising, registration, and deadlines early. Know when to meet your advisor, check degree requirements, and watch financial aid and housing deadlines closely. A lot of first-year stress comes less from hard classes and more from missing forms, dates, or registration steps.
