How does Louisiana State University evaluate out-of-state applicants for admission?
I'm a high school junior looking at LSU, but I’m from out of state and trying to understand how my application would be reviewed differently from in-state students.
I’m mostly confused about what LSU seems to weigh the most for out-of-state admission, like grades, course rigor, test scores, or other factors.

LSU does not use a separate, harsher review just because you are out of state. For freshman admission, LSU’s biggest factors are your high school academic record, especially your core GPA and the strength of your college-prep coursework, and then test scores if you choose to submit them under the current test-optional policy. Residency matters more for cost than for the basic academic review.
For most applicants, LSU looks closely at grades in core academic classes, not just overall GPA. They also pay attention to whether you took a solid college preparatory schedule, such as English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language. If your transcript shows strong performance in those areas, that usually matters more than piling up unrelated electives.
LSU has used a combination of transcript review and an index-style academic evaluation, so class rigor and consistency across semesters are important. Test scores can still help if they strengthen your application, especially if your GPA is a little lower than you want. If your scores are not helpful, applying test-optional can make sense.
For out-of-state students, the main practical difference is often scholarships. LSU does offer merit scholarships to nonresidents, and those awards tend to be tied pretty heavily to academic strength, especially GPA and sometimes submitted test scores. So even if test scores are optional for admission, strong scores can still be useful for scholarship consideration.
LSU is less focused on highly subjective extras than some very selective private colleges. Activities, leadership, and other accomplishments can still matter, but they usually support the application rather than outweigh weak academics. If you are trying to gauge competitiveness, the clearest place to focus is strong junior-year grades, solid core courses, and test scores only if they add value.
