How should I prepare for an LSU interview as a high school applicant?

I have an interview coming up for LSU and I want to be ready without sounding rehearsed. I’m a high school senior, and this is one of the first college interviews I’ve had.

I’m mostly trying to understand what kinds of topics and answers usually make a good impression so I can prepare in a natural way.

Prepare for an LSU interview by focusing on clear, specific reasons you want LSU, a few concrete examples of your academic and extracurricular interests, and a natural explanation of what you would contribute on campus. The strongest answers sound thoughtful and personal, not polished like a speech.

Start with four core topics: why LSU, why your intended major, what you do outside class, and what kind of campus community you want. For LSU, it helps to mention something real and school-specific, such as a particular academic program, research opportunity, honors option, service culture, or student organization that genuinely fits you. If you can connect your interests to Baton Rouge, SEC school spirit, undergraduate research, or LSU’s large and active campus life in a specific way, that usually comes across better than generic praise.

Be ready for common questions like Tell me about yourself, Why LSU, What are your academic interests, What is an accomplishment you’re proud of, and How have you handled a challenge. Keep each answer centered on one or two specific examples. A good formula is situation, what you did, and what it shows about you now.

To avoid sounding rehearsed, do not memorize full paragraphs. Instead, make short notes with key points and practice saying them in slightly different ways. That helps you sound prepared but still conversational.

You should also prepare two or three thoughtful questions for the interviewer. Ask about things like first-year opportunities, how students get involved in research or internships, or what successful LSU students tend to do early on. Avoid questions whose answers are easy to find on LSU’s website.

On the practical side, know your resume, test-optional or academic story if relevant, and anything already in your application. Dress neatly, arrive early, maintain steady eye contact, and keep your tone warm and direct. LSU is a large public university, so showing that you can take initiative and make use of a big campus environment is often a strong angle.
