How much do extracurricular activities matter for Louisiana State University admissions?

I’m a junior looking at LSU and trying to figure out how much my extracurriculars actually matter in the admissions process.

My grades are decent, but I know my activities list is not super long, so I want to understand how much weight LSU gives to involvement outside the classroom.

For LSU, extracurricular activities usually matter less than your academic record. LSU’s admission process is driven primarily by factors like your high school coursework, GPA, and in some cases test scores, especially for scholarship or placement purposes. If your grades and course rigor are solid, a shorter activities list usually will not hurt you much for basic admission.

That said, extracurriculars can still help at the margins. They can strengthen your overall application, show commitment and leadership, and matter more for competitive scholarships, honors opportunities, or specific programs than for general admission alone.

What matters more than quantity is whether your involvement shows consistency, responsibility, or impact. A few meaningful activities, such as a part-time job, family responsibilities, athletics, church involvement, school clubs, or community service, can all count. If you have stayed committed to one or two things over time, that often reads better than a long list of brief memberships.

If you are applying to LSU, the strongest use of your energy as a junior is usually keeping your GPA up, taking appropriately challenging classes, and making sure your activities list clearly explains what you actually did. For LSU specifically, decent grades will generally carry much more weight than having a packed extracurricular resume.
