What is the usual pre-med major path at the University of Hawaii?

I’m a high school junior looking into the University of Hawaii and I want to understand how pre-med works there. I know pre-med is usually a track rather than a major, but I’m trying to figure out what students typically major in if they want to keep medical school options open.

I’m mostly asking because I want to plan classes early and choose a major that fits the pre-med requirements without making graduation harder.

At the University of Hawaiʻi, pre-med is not a separate major, and the most common path is to choose a science major while completing medical school prerequisites. Biology is probably the most typical choice, with majors like biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry, and sometimes kinesiology or public health also fitting well.

Biology is popular because it overlaps heavily with the courses most med schools expect, such as general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and often biochemistry. That usually makes scheduling simpler and can reduce the number of extra classes you need beyond your major. Chemistry or biochemistry can also work very well, especially if you enjoy the physical sciences and want strong preparation for the MCAT.

You do not have to major in a science to be pre-med at UH. Students can major in almost anything as long as they complete the required coursework, but non-science majors usually need more careful planning to fit in lab sciences and math. If your main goal is keeping medical school options open without making graduation more complicated, biology is often the most straightforward option.

A practical way to think about it is this: choose the major you can do well in, then make sure it leaves room for the pre-med sequence early enough.
