Is the University of Hawaii a good pre-med fit for students aiming for medical school?

I’m a high school student looking at the University of Hawaii and trying to figure out whether it would be a strong place to start pre-med. I know pre-med is mostly about classes, advising, research, and getting clinical experience, so I’m trying to judge the overall fit rather than just the major.

I’m especially interested in whether the school seems supportive for students who want to stay on a medical school track.

Yes, the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa can be a solid pre-med option, especially for students who want access to a major public research university, a nearby medical school, and health-related opportunities tied to Hawaiʻi’s communities. Pre-med there is not a separate major, so what matters most is whether you can complete the required science coursework well, build relationships with advisors and faculty, and find clinical or service experience. UH Mānoa has those pieces, including pre-health advising, undergraduate research, and proximity to the John A. Burns School of Medicine.

One real strength is location. The medical school is part of UH Mānoa, which can make the pre-med path feel more visible and connected than at schools without an affiliated med school. Students can also pursue research in biology, chemistry, public health, and related areas, and Hawaiʻi’s healthcare setting can offer meaningful service and clinical exposure, especially if you are interested in rural health, Pacific Islander health, Native Hawaiian health, or community medicine.

The main question is not whether UH has a formal “pre-med program,” but whether you will thrive there academically. Medical school applicants need strong grades in demanding science classes, solid MCAT prep, and sustained clinical experience. At UH Mānoa, that is achievable, but you should expect the same challenge you would face anywhere: you need to be proactive about joining labs, finding shadowing or volunteer roles, and using advising early.

For fit, UH Mānoa makes the most sense for a student who likes the university’s environment and can see themself taking initiative. If you want a school with a built-in health focus, access to research, and a clear connection to medicine in Hawaiʻi, it is a credible place to start pre-med.
