Can I use the Common App personal statement for the University of Hawaii application?

I’m applying to the University of Hawaii and I already have a Common App personal statement draft. I’m trying to figure out whether that essay can be used as part of the application, or if the school expects something separate.

I want to make sure I’m not missing anything before I submit.

If you’re applying to a University of Hawaiʻi campus through the Common App, you can generally use your Common App personal statement as the essay in that application, because the Common App essay is built into the platform and sent along with the rest of your materials. The key thing is to check which UH campus you’re applying to and whether that campus requires any additional writing beyond the main Common App essay.

If you are applying through the University of Hawaiʻi system application instead of the Common App, then the Common App personal statement is not automatically part of that application. In that case, you should follow the prompts and requirements shown in the UH application portal for your specific campus.

So the practical answer is: if the campus is accepting your application through Common App, your Common App personal statement can be used there. Before submitting, review the application checklist for that campus and also look for separate scholarship, honors, or program-specific essays, since those are the places students most often miss an extra writing requirement.
