What makes a strong recommendation letter for the University of Hawaii application?

I’m applying to the University of Hawaii and I’m trying to understand what a strong recommendation letter should actually include. I know a lot of students ask teachers for letters, but I want mine to highlight the right kinds of qualities.

I’m especially trying to figure out what examples or traits tend to make a recommendation feel more convincing and useful to admissions.

A strong recommendation letter for the University of Hawaii should be specific, personal, and based on direct observation, not just general praise. The best letters show how you perform in a real academic or community setting, using concrete examples of your work ethic, character, and contribution. For UH applications, a letter is most useful when it helps admissions understand what kind of student and community member you are beyond grades and test scores.

A convincing letter usually includes examples of intellectual curiosity, responsibility, initiative, and follow-through. A teacher might describe how you improved over a semester, led a thoughtful discussion, helped classmates, or took on a challenging project with real commitment. If the recommender can explain not just that you are hardworking, but how they saw that in action, the letter becomes much stronger.

For the University of Hawaii, it can also help if the letter reflects qualities that fit a campus community focused on collaboration, engagement, and respect for others. That does not mean forcing references to Hawaii or local culture, but it does mean highlighting maturity, openness, service, leadership, and the ability to contribute positively to a diverse environment. A letter from someone who knows you well is usually far better than one from someone with a bigger title who can only write in broad terms.

The strongest letters often answer questions like: What stands out about this student compared with others? How does this student respond to challenge? What impact do they have on the classroom, team, workplace, or community? If your recommender can speak clearly to those points with 2 or 3 specific moments, that is usually what makes the letter feel credible and helpful to admissions.
