What should I write about in the University of Hawaii international admissions essay?

I’m an international student applying to the University of Hawaii, and I’m trying to understand what the admissions essay is really supposed to show. I know some college essays are mostly about personality and fit, but I’m not sure how that works for this application.

I want to make sure I focus on the right kind of topic and don’t waste time writing something that misses the point.

For the University of Hawaiʻi, your essay should mainly show who you are, what has shaped you, and how you would contribute to the campus, not just repeat grades or test scores. As an international applicant, it helps most to write about a specific experience, value, or goal that explains your perspective and why studying in Hawaiʻi makes sense for you. The strongest essays usually connect your background to your academic interests, your character, and what you would bring to a diverse island community.

A good topic is one that reveals something meaningful and personal through real details. That could be a moment when you adapted to a new environment, took responsibility in your family or community, developed an academic interest, or learned to navigate different cultures or languages. The key is to focus on one clear story or theme instead of trying to summarize your whole life.

Avoid choosing a topic only because it sounds impressive. A long list of awards, a broad story about “working hard,” or a vague statement about loving travel usually does not show much depth. If you write about a common topic like moving countries or overcoming a challenge, make it specific: one moment, one decision, one conversation, one change in how you think.

A useful test is this: after reading your essay, an admissions reader should understand what matters to you, how you think, and why you would be a good addition to the University of Hawaiʻi. If your draft could be sent to any college without changing a word, it probably needs to be more personal or more connected to Hawaiʻi.
