Does the University of Hawaii offer scholarships for international students?
I’m looking at the University of Hawaii as a possible college, but I’m not a U.S. citizen and I’m trying to figure out how financial aid works there.
I’ve seen some general scholarship information online, but I’m not sure what types of scholarships international students can actually apply for.

Yes. The University of Hawaiʻi does offer some scholarships that international students can apply for, but international students generally are not eligible for U.S. federal financial aid, so most funding comes from university scholarships, private scholarships, or personal/family support. At UH campuses, scholarship eligibility varies by campus, program, and enrollment status, so the key is to check the specific campus scholarship office and the international student office.
At the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, international students can be considered for certain merit-based and departmental scholarships, and some colleges or majors have their own awards.
If you are looking at UH Hilo or UH West Oʻahu, those campuses also have their own scholarship pages and sometimes offer merit scholarships that may be open to nonresident or international students. In practice, international applicants often have the best chance with academic merit scholarships, departmental awards, and external scholarships from organizations outside the university.
A good way to evaluate UH is to look for three things on the campus website: whether the scholarship is open to international students, whether it requires the FAFSA, and whether it is automatic or requires a separate application. If a scholarship requires the FAFSA, international students usually cannot use it. If it is merit-based and does not require U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, it may be a realistic option.
Also keep in mind that international students usually must show proof of sufficient financial support for the student visa process, even if they are hoping to receive scholarships later.
