What makes a strong University of Oregon supplemental essay?
I’m working on my University of Oregon application and want to make the supplemental essay feel specific and authentic instead of generic.
I know the essay is a big part of showing fit, but I’m not sure what kind of response stands out while still sounding like a real high school student.

A strong University of Oregon supplemental essay feels clearly tied to Oregon’s specific culture and opportunities, not just like a generic “why this school” response. The best essays usually connect one or two real parts of your life to concrete UO features such as Clark Honors College, the Office of Sustainability, Division I school spirit, undergraduate research, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, or programs in journalism, business, environmental studies, and sports product design. What stands out most is specificity: why those resources fit how you already think, learn, or contribute.
Instead of trying to sound impressive, sound observant. Pick a narrow angle, like your interest in community-based environmental work, sports culture and branding, or storytelling through media, and show how that would come alive at Oregon. A response that says “I love the campus and strong academics” is forgettable, but one that explains how you would move from making short-form sports content now to learning through the School of Journalism and Communication and the energy around Ducks athletics feels much more believable.
It also helps to reflect the University of Oregon’s personality. UO tends to value creativity, initiative, collaboration, and engagement with the campus community. If you can show that you would not just attend Oregon but actually participate in it, that makes the essay stronger. For example, writing about how you want to pair academic interests with student involvement, public service, outdoor culture, or interdisciplinary learning can work well if it comes from real experience.
Keep the voice natural and grounded in actual moments. A single vivid example, like organizing a local cleanup, designing merch for a club, reporting on student events, or leading something small but meaningful, will usually do more than a long list of accomplishments. The goal is to make the reader think, “This student would make sense here, and they know why.”
Before submitting, check that another college’s name could not be swapped in without changing most of the essay. If it could, it is still too generic. The strongest UO supplement sounds like a real student making a thoughtful match with a very particular university.
