What should I include in a UC Berkeley waitlist update letter?

I’m currently on the UC Berkeley waitlist and want to send a strong update letter without making it too long or repetitive. I’ve had a few new accomplishments since I applied, but I’m not sure which details actually matter most.

I’m trying to understand what kinds of updates are worth including and how to phrase them in a way that feels concise and sincere.

In a UC Berkeley waitlist update, include only meaningful new information since you applied and keep it very concise. The strongest updates are improved grades, notable awards, leadership changes, new projects or research, major service or work commitments, and anything that adds important context to your application. Berkeley values substance over length, so a short, specific letter is usually better than a long one.

Start by clearly stating that Berkeley remains a top choice and that you would accept a spot if admitted, if that is true for you.

Grades are especially worth including if they improved or stayed very strong in challenging courses. If you received a new award, advanced to a higher level in a competition, took on a leadership role, started a meaningful initiative, or had a significant achievement at work or in family responsibilities, those can help too. Small items like attending events, continued interest, or minor club participation usually do not add much unless they show real impact.

Your tone should be direct and sincere, not dramatic or overly flattering. A good structure is one short opening sentence about your continued interest, one paragraph of updates, and one short closing sentence thanking the admissions committee. Keep it focused on facts and growth, and avoid repeating activities already described in your original application unless there is a clear new development.
