What is the best strategy for responding to a UC Berkeley waitlist offer?

I was waitlisted by UC Berkeley and I’m trying to understand how people usually handle it. I know the waitlist is not a guarantee, but I want to make the strongest possible response without doing anything unnecessary.

I’m mainly looking for the general strategy students use to stay in consideration and show continued interest.

The best strategy is to accept the UC Berkeley waitlist offer, submit the optional waitlist essay only if you have real new information to add, and then move forward with another college as if Berkeley will not come through. Berkeley’s waitlist process is structured, and the main action they want is the opt-in plus a concise update through the form they provide. Sending extra materials outside that process usually does not help unless Berkeley specifically allows or requests them.

For the response itself, focus on meaningful updates since you applied: stronger grades, new awards, leadership roles, major project completions, or significant achievements tied to your academic interests. Keep it specific and factual. If Berkeley gives you a space to explain continued interest, connect that interest to concrete Berkeley opportunities such as a department, program, research area, or campus resource that fits what you already do, rather than writing a generic statement about prestige or location.

Also make sure to submit an enrollment deposit elsewhere by that school’s deadline. Berkeley waitlist decisions can come later, and an offer may arrive after you have already committed somewhere else. The practical strategy is to stay in the running at Berkeley, but protect your options and finances with another confirmed college choice.
