Does UT Austin engineering require recommendation letters for admission?
I’m applying to engineering and trying to make sure I understand what parts of the application actually matter. I’ve seen different advice online about whether recommendation letters are needed or even considered for UT Austin.
I already have teachers in mind, but I don’t want to spend time asking for letters if they won’t be used in the review process.

UT Austin engineering does not require recommendation letters for freshman admission. They are optional, and UT Austin says they may be submitted as part of the application, but admission decisions can be made without them.
For Cockrell School of Engineering applicants, the core required pieces are your application, essays or short answers, transcript, and any other required academic information. Recommendations can provide extra context, but they are not a mandatory part of the review the way they are at some colleges.
That means you do not need to treat letters as something that will make or break your application. If you have a teacher or counselor who knows your academic strengths very well, especially in math, science, or a setting that shows problem-solving and initiative, an optional letter can still be worthwhile. A generic letter usually will not add much.
If your application already strongly shows your preparation for engineering through coursework, grades, activities, and your responses, it is reasonable not to prioritize letters. If there is something a recommender can clarify or strengthen, such as your performance in a rigorous STEM class, research, design work, or growth over time, then submitting one or two solid letters can help add depth.
