What does Amherst College look for in applicants besides grades and test scores?

I’m a junior trying to understand what makes an Amherst application stand out beyond strong academics. I know selective colleges look at more than just GPA, but I’m not sure how much they weigh things like extracurriculars, essays, and recommendations.

I’m trying to get a clearer picture of the overall admissions expectations so I can focus my application on the right things.

Amherst looks for much more than strong academics. Beyond grades and course rigor, they pay close attention to personal qualities, intellectual engagement, writing, recommendations, and the impact you have in the communities you belong to. Amherst uses a holistic review process, and because it is a small liberal arts college with an open curriculum, they especially value students who are genuinely curious, self-directed, and excited to learn across disciplines.

Your essays matter because they show how you think, what you care about, and whether you would thrive in Amherst’s discussion-based, close-knit academic environment. The strongest essays usually feel specific and reflective rather than polished but generic. Amherst is often trying to understand your voice, judgment, and perspective, not just your accomplishments.

Recommendations also carry real weight. Strong letters can show qualities that grades cannot, such as intellectual generosity, maturity, initiative, resilience, and how you contribute in a classroom or community. For Amherst, teacher recommendations that speak concretely about your curiosity, engagement with ideas, and character can be especially important.

Extracurriculars are less about having a long list and more about depth, commitment, and contribution. What stands out more is sustained involvement, leadership that is meaningful rather than title-based, and evidence that you make things better for others, whether that is through a club, job, family responsibility, research, art, or local service.

They also consider context. An application stands out when it shows both achievement and a clear sense of who the student is, how they engage with ideas, and how they might contribute to Amherst’s campus culture.
