How important is research experience for UVA applicants?

Research experience is not a must-have for UVA applicants. UVA does not expect most high school students to have formal research, and having no research will not hurt an otherwise strong application. What matters more is that your activities show genuine engagement, initiative, and impact, whether that comes from a job, club leadership, community work, creative projects, family responsibilities, or academic interests pursued in your own way.

And if formal research is hard to access, you can still show academic curiosity through things like a self-directed project, advanced coursework, reading in a subject area, entering competitions, or creating something tangible tied to your interests.
