How important are extracurricular activities in UVA admissions?

Extracurriculars matter at UVA, but they are clearly secondary to academics. UVA places the strongest emphasis on course rigor, grades, and overall academic preparation, and those pieces usually do more to determine whether an applicant is competitive in the first place.

UVA uses a holistic review, so activities are part of the picture, but they are not usually about having the longest resume or the most prestigious titles. What tends to help more is depth, impact, and fit: sticking with a few commitments, taking initiative, working a job, helping family, pursuing a real interest, or contributing to your school or community in a meaningful way. Limited extracurriculars are less of a problem if the ones you do have are authentic and you can show how you spent your time.

For UVA specifically, this also means your application should make your academic strengths very clear. A challenging schedule in core subjects, strong performance, and context within your high school matter a lot. If your activities are modest, the goal is not to make them sound bigger than they are, but to present them clearly and show what they say about your character, priorities, and engagement.

In practice, a student with excellent rigor and grades plus a smaller number of real commitments is often in a better position than a student with weaker academics and a long but superficial activity list. UVA does want students who will contribute outside class, but it does not require unusually flashy extracurriculars to see that potential.
