How does the University of Virginia application review process work?

I’m a high school senior trying to understand how UVA reviews applications overall. I know some schools read applications holistically, but I’m not sure what parts of the file carry the most weight there.

I want to understand the general review process so I can make sense of how my grades, activities, essays, and recommendations are considered.

UVA uses a holistic review, but academics are the foundation of the decision. The admission office pays especially close attention to the strength of your coursework, your grades over time, and how you used the opportunities available at your high school. Essays, activities, and recommendations matter, but they are generally read in the context of academic preparation and fit with the application as a whole.

In practice, UVA looks closely at transcript details such as course rigor, grade trends, and performance in core academic subjects. They care about whether you challenged yourself with AP, IB, dual enrollment, or honors classes when those options were available, not just your GPA in isolation. Class rank can be considered if your school reports it, but UVA is used to evaluating students from many different grading systems.

Your extracurriculars are reviewed for impact, commitment, and initiative rather than just the number of activities. A few sustained involvements with leadership, service, work, family responsibilities, or genuine achievement usually help more than a long list. The essays help readers understand your voice, perspective, and what you might add to the UVA community, so they can be important in separating applicants who look similar academically.

Recommendations and the school report add context about your character, classroom presence, and school environment. They are useful, but they usually support what is already visible in the transcript and the rest of the file rather than overriding weak academics.

For Virginia residents, UVA also considers the school and regional context because it aims to build a class from across the Commonwealth.
