Can you change your major after being admitted to Virginia Tech?

I’m applying to Virginia Tech and trying to understand how flexible major selection is after admission. I’ve heard some schools let students switch majors more easily than others.

I want to know whether being admitted into one major or college at Virginia Tech usually makes it possible to move into another major later.

Yes, you can change your major at Virginia Tech after you enroll, but it is not equally easy across all majors. Virginia Tech admits students by college or program in many cases, and some majors are restricted or capacity-limited, so switching later can range from straightforward to quite competitive.

The biggest example is engineering. Students who start in the College of Engineering generally enter as General Engineering and then move into a specific engineering major through an internal process, while students outside engineering usually cannot just switch in casually.

So the practical answer is that changing majors is possible, but you should not assume admission to one major means open access to every other one later. At Virginia Tech, internal transfer policies are handled by each college or department, and they often depend on how many seats are available and whether you have completed certain prerequisite courses.

If you already have a likely target major, it is smartest to apply as close to that area as possible rather than treating one major as an easy back door into another. That matters most for highly structured or popular programs where students need specific first-year coursework to stay on track.
