How should I choose a teacher recommendation for Barnard College?

I’m a junior trying to plan ahead for college applications, and Barnard is one of the schools I’m considering. I know teacher recommendations matter a lot, but I’m not sure what kind of teacher would make the strongest recommendation for Barnard.

Should I prioritize a teacher from a core academic subject, a teacher who knows me best, or someone from a class where I showed a lot of growth?

For Barnard, start with a core academic teacher who knows you well and can write in specific detail about how you think, contribute, and grow in class. The strongest recommendation is usually not from the “most impressive” subject alone, but from a teacher who can give concrete evidence of your intellectual engagement, writing or discussion skills, and classroom presence.

If Barnard is on your list, prioritize teachers from junior year core subjects like English, math, science, social studies, or world language unless a college’s policy says otherwise. A recommendation from a teacher who taught you recently is usually stronger than one from earlier in high school because they can speak to your current level of work and maturity.

Between “knows me best” and “saw a lot of growth,” choose the person who can do both if possible. A growth story is valuable only if the teacher can explain it with specifics, like how you went from hesitant class participation to leading discussion, or how your writing became sharper through revision. A teacher who likes you but can only say you are kind and hardworking is usually less useful than one who can show how you learn.

A practical way to decide is to ask: who has seen my mind at work, who can compare me favorably to other strong students, and who will write with detail rather than general praise? If one teacher can speak to your voice in discussion and another can speak to your persistence and improvement, either could work, but the better choice is the one who can make Barnard picture you in its classrooms.
