How do I brainstorm a strong Barnard supplemental essay idea?

I’m starting to work on my Barnard supplement and want to choose a topic that feels personal but still fits what the school is looking for. I have a few possible ideas, but I’m not sure which one would make the strongest essay.

I want to use the brainstorming stage to figure out what kind of story or angle would work best before I start drafting.

Start by choosing an idea that shows how you think, what you value, and why Barnard specifically fits that version of you. The strongest topic is usually not your biggest accomplishment, but the one that reveals your perspective in a concrete, memorable way.

A good brainstorming filter is this: which idea lets you say something only you could say, and which one connects naturally to Barnard without forcing it?

When you compare possible ideas, look for three things. First, specificity: can you anchor the essay in a scene, habit, question, or conflict instead of a broad theme like “leadership” or “resilience”? Second, insight: does the topic reveal how your mind works, not just what happened? Third, fit: can you show why this story points toward the kind of student who would thrive at Barnard?

One useful way to brainstorm is to make a short list of moments when you felt especially curious, challenged, or changed. Then ask: what did I notice that others missed, what belief was tested, what pattern kept showing up in my life, and why would Barnard care about this? For example, an essay about organizing a club only gets interesting if the real story is how you learned to build space for quieter voices, question authority, or rethink your own assumptions.

I would avoid picking a topic just because it sounds impressive. Barnard essays tend to work best when they feel precise, reflective, and connected to community, scholarship, and engagement with the world around you.
