How does Amherst College financial aid work for international students?

I’m an international high school student looking at Amherst and trying to understand how its financial aid works for non-U.S. applicants. I’ve heard some colleges are need-aware or give limited aid to international students, so I want to know what Amherst’s policy actually means in practice.

I’m mainly trying to figure out whether international students can get enough aid to make attendance realistic.

Amherst is one of the strongest places to look if you are an international student who needs substantial aid. It is need-blind for all applicants, including international students, which means your ability to pay is not considered in the admissions decision. If you are admitted, Amherst says it will meet 100 percent of your demonstrated financial need, and that applies to international students as well.

In practice, that means Amherst can absolutely make attendance realistic for low-income and middle-income international students. Its aid is institutional grant aid based on your family’s financial situation, not a small merit scholarship that leaves a huge gap.

You should still expect a full financial review. Your demonstrated need is what Amherst calculates from those materials, so the final package may not match exactly what your family personally feels it can pay.

A few practical points matter. Amherst does not offer merit scholarships, so aid is entirely need-based.
