How should I prepare for a George Mason University interview?

I’m a high school senior and I have an interview coming up for George Mason University. I know interviews can be pretty straightforward, but I still want to make a good impression and not sound unprepared.

I’m mainly trying to understand what kind of preparation is actually useful for this interview so I can feel ready going into it.

Prepare for a George Mason University interview by focusing on three things: knowing why Mason specifically fits you, being ready to talk through a few concrete experiences from high school, and having thoughtful questions about the university. You do not need memorized speeches, but you do need clear, specific reasons for your interest.

Start by reviewing the academic program you are most interested in. Be able to explain what you want to study and why Mason is a good place to do it, whether that is because of location, faculty, career access, undergraduate research, or a particular school or department. If you are undecided, that is fine, but you should still be able to name a few academic areas you want to explore and why Mason’s size and options appeal to you.

Next, prepare short answers to the most common interview topics: tell me about yourself, why George Mason, what are your academic interests, what have you done outside class, what is a challenge you faced, and what would you contribute to campus. The best way to sound prepared is to answer with specific examples. Pick 2 or 3 activities, projects, jobs, or commitments and practice describing what you did, what you learned, and how that connects to college.

Also prepare questions to ask the interviewer. Good questions might be about first-year advising, internship access in the D.C. area, student involvement, undergraduate research, or how students in your intended major build experience outside the classroom. Avoid questions whose answers are easy to find on the main admissions page.

Before the interview, review your application so your answers match what you already submitted. Dress neatly, arrive early or log in a few minutes ahead if it is virtual, and practice speaking out loud so you sound natural rather than scripted.
