How hard is it to get into Johns Hopkins University as a high school student?

I’m a junior trying to figure out how competitive Johns Hopkins is overall and what kind of students it usually admits. I know it’s a very selective school, but I’m mostly trying to understand what level of academics and activities students typically need to be a realistic applicant.

Johns Hopkins is extremely selective, so getting in is quite hard for any high school applicant. Most admitted students have near-top grades in the most challenging courses available, especially AP, IB, or dual-enrollment classes. Strong test scores, when submitted, are usually at the highest end of the applicant pool as well.

For academics, Hopkins typically expects students who have done exceptionally well in rigorous math and science classes, though it also values strength across the full transcript. The school is especially known for engineering, natural sciences, public health, and pre-med, but it admits students across many interests. Competitive applicants usually show depth in one or two activities rather than a long list of surface-level involvement. That depth can look like sustained research, major leadership, published creative work, entrepreneurship, or meaningful community impact.

A realistic applicant is usually someone who has mostly A/A+ grades in the toughest schedule available at their school and has pursued a clear academic or extracurricular theme with real commitment. Johns Hopkins also cares about fit, intellectual curiosity, and evidence that a student will contribute to campus life, not just credentials. So yes, it is a reach for almost everyone, but students with outstanding academics and a focused, well-developed profile are the ones most likely to be seriously competitive.
