How selective is the University of Wisconsin?

I’m trying to get a realistic sense of how hard it is to get into UW as a high school senior. I keep seeing different opinions online, and I’m mostly trying to understand how selective it is overall compared with other large public universities.

I’m not looking for one specific year’s stats, just the general level of selectivity and what that usually means for applicants.

The University of Wisconsin–Madison is fairly selective overall, especially for a large public university. It is not in the ultra-selective range, but admission is competitive and many applicants are turned away each year.

Strong grades and a rigorous course load matter a lot, and the school expects solid academic preparation. UW–Madison is a major research flagship with a national applicant pool, so admitted students usually have well above-average GPAs and strong coursework. Some programs can be much more selective than the university overall, so the major you apply to can matter too.

Compared with other big public universities, UW–Madison is usually considered moderately to highly selective. It tends to be more selective than many large state schools, but less selective than the most competitive public flagships like Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan, or UNC Chapel Hill.
