What is a good pre-med application strategy for colleges in Wisconsin?

I’m a high school junior trying to plan ahead for pre-med, and I want to apply to colleges in Wisconsin. I know pre-med is not a major, so I’m trying to figure out what kinds of schools and programs I should be looking for.

I’m mostly looking for a strategy that will help me stay on track for med school without making college applications way more stressful than they already are.

A strong pre-med strategy in Wisconsin is to apply to a mix of schools that give you strong grades, easy access to science advising, and real clinical or research opportunities. Since pre-med is not a major, what matters most is picking a college where you can keep a high GPA in a rigorous but manageable environment. In Wisconsin, that usually means looking at a blend of larger research universities, strong liberal arts colleges, and a few direct hospital or health-science partnerships.

For example, UW-Madison is the biggest in-state option and has a major medical ecosystem, including the UW Health system, lots of undergraduate research, and plenty of biology and chemistry course options. Marquette and Milwaukee School of Engineering are also worth a look if you want urban access and nearby clinical shadowing opportunities in Milwaukee. If you prefer smaller classes and more advisor access, schools like Lawrence, Beloit, or Ripon can be very good for pre-med because it can be easier to build close relationships with faculty who write strong recommendations.

A smart application list should include at least one or two schools where admission and GPA pressure feel comfortable, not just the most selective options. For pre-med, a school that makes it easier to earn A’s in chemistry, biology, and physics can be more useful than a school with a louder reputation. Also check whether the school offers committee letters, structured pre-health advising, hospital partnerships, and research for freshmen or sophomores.
