What holistic admissions factors does NYU consider besides grades and test scores?

I’m a junior trying to understand how NYU reviews applications beyond stats. I know schools sometimes look at things like extracurriculars, essays, and course rigor, but I’m not sure what matters most in a holistic review.

I want to get a better sense of what parts of an application can help show fit and overall strength besides GPA and testing.

NYU reviews a lot more than grades and test scores. In a holistic review, the university looks at the rigor of your curriculum, your extracurricular involvement, your essays, letters of recommendation, and how you’ve used your time and opportunities outside the classroom. They also pay attention to whether your application shows intellectual curiosity, initiative, and a clear sense of what you might contribute to the NYU community.

For NYU specifically, fit with the program or school you’re applying to matters a lot. Different divisions, like Stern, Tisch, CAS, or Tandon, each look for evidence that your interests and experiences connect to that area. Strong essays can help here by showing why NYU is a good match for your goals, not just why you want to be in New York City.

Context is another important part of the review. NYU considers the challenges and opportunities in your high school, family background, and any responsibilities you’ve taken on, so they can judge your achievements in context rather than only by raw numbers. If you have unusual talents, leadership, creative work, work experience, or a distinctive story, those can all strengthen your application when they are presented clearly and specifically.
