How do I write a strong NYU "Why Us" essay?

I’m working on my college essays and NYU is one of my top schools. I know the "Why NYU" essay is supposed to show fit, but I’m not sure what makes it feel specific and genuine instead of just listing random programs.

I have a general idea of what I like academically, but I’m struggling to turn that into an essay that clearly explains why NYU is a good match for me.

A strong NYU “Why Us” essay should connect your academic goals to very specific NYU resources and explain how you would actually use them. The best essays usually show a clear fit between what you want to study, how you like to learn, and what NYU uniquely offers in New York City and across its schools and programs. Instead of name-dropping lots of classes, focus on 2 to 3 concrete things you would pursue and why they matter to your plans.

For NYU, specificity matters because the university is so large and so flexible. You might mention a particular major, minor, institute, lab, center, professor, or interdisciplinary opportunity at your chosen school, but only if you can say what you would do with it. For example, someone interested in media could connect coursework at Tisch or Steinhardt with opportunities in New York’s media industry, student publications, or internship access. Someone interested in business might connect Stern coursework with the city’s finance, startup, or nonprofit ecosystem.

The strongest essays also show that you understand NYU’s culture, not just its location. If you say you want access to the city, explain how that environment would deepen your learning, research, or career goals. If you like interdisciplinary work, mention how NYU’s structure across schools could support that. If there’s a specific club, program, or academic pathway that feels like a genuine fit, tie it to a moment from your own experience that made you seek that kind of opportunity.
