How should I write a strong transfer essay for the University of Vermont?

I’m thinking about transferring to the University of Vermont and I want my essay to actually explain why I’m a good fit there. I already have some college coursework, but I’m not sure how much to focus on my current school versus my reasons for wanting to transfer.

What kinds of things should I emphasize in a transfer essay to make it feel specific and convincing?

A strong transfer essay should spend most of its time on why the school is the right next step for your academic and personal goals, not on a long summary of what’s wrong with your current school. The best essays are specific about programs, opportunities, and campus culture, and they explain how your past college experience has clarified what you need next.

The clearest approach is to name the exact academic direction you want and connect it to concrete resources there. That might mean a major, a minor, a research path, an internship pipeline, study abroad, or a student organization that fits your goals.

You should also use your current college experience as evidence, not just background. Briefly explain what you learned where you are now, what gap you noticed, and why the new school solves that gap better. A strong essay might say, in effect, “I discovered I want a larger research setting with more access to applied opportunities,” or “I want a campus community where I can do X, Y, and Z.”

What makes it convincing is specificity. Mention one or two features that genuinely match your goals, then show how your coursework, interests, and activities have prepared you to contribute there.
